6 visibility lessons from Emily in Paris - Lessons by Glory Edozien
Have you seen the recent Netflix Series - Emily In Paris? Well I haven’t yet but it’s on my list now. There has been so much rave about it and while I put it off for later, this awesome review by Glory Edozien brought it up my list!
If you have watched it, we would love your input and insight!
If you haven’t watched it yet but you have heard about it and maybe made a mental note to check it out, these 6 lessons are why you should pay attention to it.
And if you don’t know and haven’t heard about it at all here is a brief summary according to Wikipedia - Emily in Paris is an American comedy-drama streaming television series created by Darren Star, which premiered on Netflix. Emily in Paris follows Emily, a driven 20-something American from Chicago who moves to Paris for an unexpected job opportunity. She is tasked with bringing an American point of view to a venerable French marketing firm. Cultures clash as she adjusts to the challenges of life in Paris while juggling her career, new friendships and love life
Now you know a bit about Emily, let’s get to the lessons!
Authenticity is the first step to Visibility: although Emily’s first client account wasn’t her preferred choice and her boss couldn’t stand her, her authentic approach to work helped her to get noticed by choice clients, positioned her as an influencer and earned her the respect of her colleagues. So practice authenticity in your 2021 visibility strategy
Value is what makes you visible: when Emily got to Paris, she didn’t know the language, the culture was against her and she wasn’t liked but as soon as the First Lady commented on her post she was suddenly invited to the table. The truth is people only start to notice you when you provide value so the next step in your visibility journey is to find out how do the skills you have make you valuable? How do the skills you have answer problems and help organizations succeed?
Not everyone will celebrate your visibility success- and it’s okay. Emily’s boss was threatened by her from the word go and this escalated when she started getting visible- to the extent that she wanted her to delete her social media account. Remember not everybody will be happy about your visibility success don’t let it get to you. Keep doing good work but also find innovative ways to share the limelight with others, where possible
Know your audience and always be ready to pitch: Emily met a hotel tycoon at a gallery event and her pitch was on point. She read back his quote from interviews and was ready with an awesome pitch to hook his attention!
Know your company and industry inside and out: Emily might have been a JJC ( Newcomer) in Paris- but she was not a novice when it came to her industry and what the client wants. This knowledge gave her unique insights to offer premium value. Always. A successful visibility strategy will require industry insight and knowledge.
Your network is vital to your visibility- Emily was great at making friends. These friends proved invaluable whether it was to get invites to choice events, when she needs a shoulder to cry on, or when she needed to impress a client.
